Green vision

How do we ensure ecological development outside the cities in small communities, even ones facing degrowth?

Luonnonmaa is an island on the Finnish West archipelago coast, close to the city of Turku. Half the size of Manhattan and home to just 2000 people, the island is defined by its clean Nordic nature and undulating farming landscape. However, the way of life on Luonnonmaa is challenged by climate catastrophe and biodiversity loss, just as it is in more population-concentrated locations on the planet. The island is seemingly empty – or full of immaculate space – but a closer inspection reveals that most of the island area is defined by human activity, and its ripple effects. The future population of the island will need to provide more opportunity for nature, while they develop their way of life, means of transportation, work, as well as food and energy production.
